Pro tips

  • Average your last 10–20 posts rather than a single one — one viral post (or one flop) skews the whole picture.
  • Compare accounts of similar size: small accounts naturally post much higher engagement rates than accounts with millions of followers.
  • On Instagram and TikTok, include saves and shares — they are strong signals the algorithms reward, and they often outweigh likes.
  • Track the rate monthly instead of obsessing over one number: the trend tells you far more than a single snapshot.
  • Reporting to a client? Show their rate next to the platform benchmark — it turns "we did well" into a number they can see.

FAQ

It depends on the platform. As indicative orders of magnitude: on Instagram, above 1% is fair, above 3% is good and above 6% is excellent; TikTok runs higher (3–10%), while LinkedIn, X and Facebook run lower (roughly 0.5–5% depending on the band). Niche, audience size and content format all move these numbers, so treat them as reference points, not grades.
The per-post, follower-based formula: (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100. It is the most common definition and the easiest to compare across accounts. Other methods exist — for example dividing by reach or impressions instead of followers — and they give different (usually higher) numbers, so always compare rates computed the same way.
A single post is noisy: one reel that takes off or one post that flops can double or halve your rate. Averaging your likes and comments over the last 10–20 posts gives a stable figure that actually reflects how the account performs.
Yes — and small accounts usually score higher. Nano accounts (under 10k followers) have tighter communities, so engagement rates of 5–10% are common there while big accounts sit far lower. That skew is normal: benchmark against accounts of a similar size for a fair comparison.
